ABOUT THE SHOW

Foundry Vineyards is pleased to host On Alder, a group exhibition featuring prints, works on paper, and mixed-media pieces by Mokuhanga Project Space resident artists. On view May 1 through July 13, 2025, the show celebrates the intersection of art, craft, and place — taking its name from Alder Street, home of the residency. Join us for the opening reception on Friday, May 1 from 5 to 7 pm, where we will also be pouring five newly released Foundry Vineyards wines for the first time. On Saturday, May 2, stop by for a live mokuhanga printing demonstration from 1 to 3 pm.

ABOUT THE ARTIST(S)

Foundry Vineyards is proud to host On Alder, a group exhibition of works created during the Mokuhanga Project Space artist residencies in Walla Walla. The show opens at Foundry Vineyards on Friday, May 1, with a public reception from 5 to 7 pm, and runs through July 13, 2025. The opening reception will also mark the public debut of five new Foundry Vineyards wines, available to taste alongside the art.

Bringing together prints, works on paper, and mixed-media pieces by a growing roster of resident artists, On Alder reflects the diversity of approaches that emerge when artists are given dedicated time and space to push the boundaries of traditional Japanese woodblock printing. The exhibition takes its name from Alder Street, where the Mokuhanga Project Space residency is housed - a quiet address that has become a gathering point for artists drawn to the medium and to one another. Each work in the exhibition is a personal response to the environment, the materials, and this particular moment in mokuhanga's ongoing evolution.
Mokuhanga is a traditional Japanese woodblock printing method distinguished by its use of natural materials - wood, water, pigment, and paper. At every stage of the process, from mixing pigments and dampening woodblocks to wetting handmade washi paper, water plays an essential role. That intimate relationship with natural materials makes mokuhanga especially resonant today as artists explore environmental themes and a changing relationship with the natural world.

Mokuhanga Project Space was founded in Walla Walla in 2016 to provide artists with time, space, and support to experiment, take risks, and advance the art form. The residency program, now in its second year of this exhibition series, has drawn artists from across the country to engage deeply with the medium and with the landscape of the Pacific Northwest.

On Saturday, May 2, from 1 to 3 pm, visitors are invited to participate in a live printing demonstration at the gallery, where they can print their own small woodblock print using traditional mokuhanga techniques - a rare hands-on opportunity to experience the process directly.
