Matthew Pierce, MFA, was born and raised in Washington state. He received his B.A. in Art at Walla Walla University in 1988. Matthew went on to work in graphic design as an art director, illustrator and photographer for the next twenty years. In 2015 he completed his MFA from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco and became an Art professor at Walla Walla University. Now a full time artist, Matthew explores the ideas and assumptions we attach to commonplace and nostalgic objects and how our perceptions are altered by time and perspective.
Matthew began work on his abstract series; ‘Horizons’ in 2022 as an exploration of the vast landscape of the Pacific Northwest. In Matthew’s current work, painting has increasingly become a place to experiment with different techniques of paint application. He is particularly interested in exploring the boundaries of traditional representation and abstraction, with his paintings reflect his simultaneous use of both approaches. There is a spontaneous, and authentic quality to Pierce’s technique. His paintings are characterized by broad brushstrokes, exuberant application of paint with a focus on color relationships.
