August 26 - SummerFest Concert

 

World renowned cellist Zuill Bailey will be joined by Kurt Nikkanen, violin; Scott Rawls, viola; and Kraig Scott, harpsichord for Northwest Bach Festival’s Summerfest in Walla Walla. The trio thrilled audiences at the Festival in March and are now joined by Walla Walla harpsichordist Kraig Scott to play the music of Bach, Dohnányi, Schubert, Beethoven and Mozart on Friday, August 26 at 7:30 pm at Foundry Vineyards.

About the performers:

Kurt Nikkanen, violin, is an international soloist of the highest order. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he began his violin studies at the age of three, later studying with Roman Totenberg and Jens Ellerman. At twelve he gave his Carnegie Hall debut, performing with the New York Youth Symphony; two years later he was invited by Zubin Mehta to perform the Paganini Concerto No.1 with the New York Philharmonic for a Young People's Concert. He studied with Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School. Kurt, based in New York City, performs with leading orchestras and presenters in the USA and Europe and has toured Japan and the Far East. 

 

Scott Rawls, viola, has appeared as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and Europe. Under the baton of Maestro Dmitry Sitkovetsky, he plays principal viola in the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. During the summer months, Scott plays principal viola in the festival orchestra at Brevard Music Center where he also coordinates the viola program. Scott currently serves as Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He holds a BM degree from Indiana University and a MM and DMA from State University of New York at Stony Brook.

 

Kraig Scott, keyboard A native of British Columbia, Kraig Scott has made recital appearances throughout North America, Europe, and the Far East As a member of the Walla Walla University music faculty Scott’s responsibilities include conducting the University choirs, teaching organ and harpsichord, serving as church organist, and overseeing all music at the University Church and tours with the choral ensemble, I Cantori. In addition to his work at WWU he serves as adjunct instructor at Whitman College. Kraig holds an associate degree from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto and a bachelor’s degree from Walla Walla University. His advanced degrees include a MMus from the University of Oregon, an MA and DMA from the Eastman School of Music.

His rare combination of celebrated artistry, technical wizardry and engaging personality has secured his place as one of the most sought after and active cellists today.
